The authority with jurisdiction classifies hazardous areas. The properties of the flammable vapors, liquids, gases, combustible dust, or fibers that may be present, as well as the likelihood of an explosive concentration or quantity, are used to classify the material. The most common for electrical equipment in hazardous areas are IECEx (International), and either the Class/Division or Class/Zone System (North America).
